Six planned performances of Luke Mockridge’s upcoming comedy tour have been cancelled in response to his derogatory jokes.
For comedian Luke Mockridge (35), his tasteless jokes about the Paralympics are having more and more consequences. After his new Sat.1 comedy format was canceled by the broadcaster, six performances of his planned “Luke Mockridge – Funny Times” tour have also been canceled. Comedy performances on September 14 in Mainz, October 15 and 16 in Bonn, October 17 in Siegen and October 25 and 26 in Gelsenkirchen will not take place.
Haus der Springmaus cancels performances by Luke Mockridge
On the venue’s website: “The show by Luke Mockridge, the FUNNY TIMES tour, planned for September 14, 2024 at the Frankfurter Hof in Mainz has been canceled by the organizer (Konzertbüro Schoneberg GmbH).” The reasons for the cancellation are not given in the article.
Mockridge’s planned appearances in Bonn will also not take place. “In consultation with the agency and the artist, we have decided to cancel Luke Mockridge’s two events on October 15th and 16th,” it says. The institution “clearly distances itself from statements that ridicule people with disabilities in a defamatory and disrespectful manner,” it says in explanation of the cancellation.
The comedian’s performances on 25 and 26 October in Gelsenkirchen have also been cancelled. “It was with great irritation and dismay that we took note of Luke Mockridge’s comments on the topic of the Paralympics and people with disabilities in the podcast ‘die Deutschen’. […]. We find his statements inhumane and shameful.” . “The shows planned for October 25 and 26, 2024 and already sold out in the Gelsenkirchen KAUE” would therefore not take place.
Mockridge’s planned appearance on October 17th in the Leonhard-Gläser-Saal of the Siegerlandhalle has also been cancelled.
The statements and the horrified reactions
The trigger for outrage and criticism was an episode of the podcast “Die Deutschen” by Nizar (40) and Shayan, in which Mockridge was a guest and which also covered the Paralympic Games. In the episode, which was published in mid-August, Mockridge cracked tasteless jokes at the expense of people with disabilities. Among others, former track cyclist and two-time Olympic champion Kristina Vogel (33), who has been paraplegic since a training accident in 2018, criticized Mockridge’s statements in clear terms as “dehumanizing sh**”.
As a result, Sat.1 canceled the comedy quiz “What’s in the Box?”. Mockridge’s TV comeback was actually supposed to be broadcast on September 12th. The comedian also did not take part in an event of the comedy format “Night Wash” at short notice. Mockridge was actually supposed to be on stage with other comedians in the castle park in Paderborn last Sunday (September 8th). The comedy evening also took place – just without the son of the acting couple Bill Mockridge (77) and Margie Kinsky (66).
