Veto on pension reform: Javier Milei met with UCR deputies at Casa Rosada

Determined to destroy the historic motto “that breaks, but does not bend“, stated by Leandro N. Alem, the President Javier Milei received this Tuesday deputies of the Radical Civic Union (UCR) hours before the session in the Congress by the Executive’s veto of the pension reform and, in this context, the scenario is complicated for the opposition that will seek to regulate the rules that increase pension benefits.

As he was able to reconstruct ScopeMilei met with five legislators from the radical party with the aim of changing their vote: Luis Albino Picat, Michel Tournier, Pablo Cervi, Martin Arjol and Ricardo Campero. These five legislators could be joined by the cases of Lisandro Nieri, Pamela Fernanda Verasay and Soledad Carrizowho would be willing to vote in support of the presidential veto.

Since June -when the lower house gave partial approval to the pension reform- things have happened. Just to mention one, last Friday the President landed in Mendoza to speak at the 45th Convention of the Argentine Institute of Executives in Finance. There he was received by the local governor, Alfredo Cornejowho was friendly with the Head of State and his new girlfriend, “Yuyito” González. The brief meeting served for Milei to let the provincial leader know that he needed the votes of Nieri, Verasay and Carrizowho respond to his command. The silence of the legislators raises suspicions within the party itself and within the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Cornejo will meet again this Tuesday with Javier Milei in Buenos Aires, to attend the Education Forum that will take place this afternoon at the Libertad Palace (formerly CCK).

The meeting held on Tuesday in the Hall of Scientists was also attended by the inner circle of the national cabinet, which began to meet every Tuesday three weeks ago. In this framework, the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Mileithe President of the Chamber of Deputies, Martin Menemthe Deputy Chief of Staff of the Interior, Lisandro Catalanthe Ministers of Defense, Luis Petriand Security, Patricia Bullrich, and the Undersecretary of Federal Programming and Legislative Coordination, Martin Matzkin.

It is worth remembering that the proposal vetoed by Milei comes from within the Radical bloc in the House of Representatives, and was approved in Congress with broad consensus among the opposition. This week, the bloc lost one of its 34 legislators, Rodolfo Galimberti from Entre Ríos, and will be replaced by Nancy Ballejos, from the PRO, a sector much closer to the Government.

In this context, the senator and head of the party, Martin Lousteauwent out to point out to the dissident deputies: “The issue of retirees is very important; the mobility law was born from the hand of the UCR and, if the radical legislators are now going to change their vote, they will have to give explanations as to why they are doing so.”

The ruling party seeks to secure votes in a key week

On Monday, the block leaders of Deputies from La Libertad Avanza, the MID, and the PRO held a meeting at Casa Rosada with the Secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei.
