Tyrese Gibson (45) has commented on the headlines surrounding his arrest. The actor was provisionally arrested in court on September 9th following a hearing in the ongoing child support dispute with his ex-wife Samantha Lee. The reason for this is said to be missing child support payments for their five-year-old daughter. “Being arrested was not fun. In fact, it was very traumatic,” Gibson wrote the following day.
He also shared a clip of himself on the radio show “The Breakfast Club” in which he talks about his love for Jesus. “One might ask why this judge Kevin M. Farmer hates me so much?” the text continued. The “Fast & Furious” actor also shared a link that he called the judge’s “nightmare.”
20 pages of appeal made public
The link contained Gibson’s 20-page appeal against the verdict. It states that he has voluntarily supported his daughter Soraya financially since her birth and throughout the divorce, without the need for a court order. The American has paid the highest stipulated maintenance obligation – which, in his opinion, is sufficient.
The fact that the judge is now retroactively demanding further payments from him sets a bad precedent for ex-partners who want to support their child voluntarily. Gibson sees the demand as a “punishment” and sees it as disguised spousal support.
Arrest for contempt of court order
Tyrese Gibson was arrested in court because he had not paid the ordered 10,000 US dollars (around 9,000 euros) per month to his ex-wife. Instead, he transferred 2,200 dollars (around 1,900 euros) per month, which is significantly less than demanded. According to the celebrity portal, the judge stated that Gibson could avoid a prison sentence by paying 73,000 US dollars (around 66,000 euros). This includes 7,500 US dollars (around 6,800 euros) for Samantha Lee’s legal fees.
Gibson, who enjoyed success as an R&B singer as well as an actor, married Lee in 2017 and their daughter was born a year later. In 2020, the couple announced their separation and have been fighting in court ever since over payments for their child. He has a 17-year-old daughter from his first marriage.
