The Paris-born singer, dancer and actress made her international breakthrough in the 1950s and 1960s thanks to her music. During this time, the daughter of an Italian artist couple also appeared in numerous major and popular films. In 1959, she was also nominated for a Grammy as best female singer.
In addition to her huge success in Europe, she was also able to gain a foothold in the USA, where she was a popular guest on numerous TV shows such as the “Dean Martin Show” and the “Bing Crosby Show”. Her biggest hits in this country include the songs “Ganz Paris träumt von der Liebe”, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Honolulu-Strand-Bikini”, “Wo meine Sonne Leuchten” and “Ein Schiff wird kommen (Hafen von Piraeus)”.
Caterina Valente withdrew from public life years ago
Caterina Valente had German citizenship due to her marriage to her German husband and lived in Germany and the USA for a long time. For many years she lived away from the hustle and bustle in the tranquil Swiss canton of Ticino. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Valente has essentially withdrawn completely from the public eye and only gave occasional interviews.
In 2019, a conversation with her friend and manager Günther Huber was also published. There, among other things, she spoke about getting older and answered the question about her well-being with the words of actress Bette Davis (1908-1989): “Old age is not for weaklings.”
