MTV Video Music Awards 2024: Taylor Swift breaks records and commemorates 9/11

Taylor Swift breaks records at the MTV VMAs. In New York, she thanks Travis Kelce, colleagues and fans – and remembers 9/11.

Taylor Swift (34) broke the record for most solo wins. She added seven more trophies to her 23. Swift thus beat the previous record held by Beyoncé (43), who won 26 times as a solo artist. As part of Destiny’s Child and with Jay-Z (54) as the Carters, Beyoncé also has 30 wins: a tie between the two US superstars. Swift broke another record on Tuesday evening (September 11) in New York: she is the first artist to win the award for video of the year five times.

In her acceptance speech for the latter video, Swift spoke about directing the video and acknowledged many of the people involved, including Post Malone (29) and “my friend Travis Kelce,” who “came from the other end of the studio where we [das Video] “I want to thank him for adding that to our shoot because I’ll always remember that.”

she continued, acknowledging the fans. She thanked her “Swifties” for “making my life what it is, for making the ‘Eras’ tour what it has become, and for making ‘The Tortured Poet’s Department’ what it has become,” she told the audience. “That’s all of you.”

Taylor Swift remembers 9/11

When Taylor Swift took the stage to accept her award for best collaboration in the “Moon Person” category alongside her colleague Post Malone, she first commemorated the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001.

: “When I woke up this morning on 9/11 in New York, I thought about what happened 23 years ago – everyone who lost a loved one and everyone we lost,” Swift said. “And that’s the most important thing about today. And everything that happens tonight ties into that.”

Taylor Swift: “It’s an important choice”

Before leaving the stage, Swift reiterated what she had written the night before, urging people to vote in the upcoming election. “If you’re 18, please register to vote,” she told the VMAs audience. “It’s an important election.”

Already at the top of the nominations

Swift already topped the nominations list with 12, including some of the most coveted awards like Artist of the Year and multiple awards for her and Post Malone’s “Fortnight.” The song won Song of the Year, Song of the Summer and Video of the Year, among others. She is the only artist to win the latter award three years in a row – another record.

Beyoncé was nominated for song of the year for her hit “Texas Hold ‘Em,” the first single from her country album “Cowboy Carter.” “Texas” competed against Swift’s “Fortnight,” Kendrick Lamar’s (37) “Not Like Us,” Sabrina Carpenter’s (25) “Espresso,” Teddy Swim’s (31) “Lose Control,” and Jack Harlow’s (26) “Lovin on Me.”
