While Harvey Weinstein is recovering from emergency surgery, new charges have been brought against the former film producer.
Before the start of another trial, Harvey Weinstein (72) is being charged with new allegations. This is reported, among other things, citing the public prosecutor’s office, which announced this during a court hearing on September 12. Due to an operation from which Weinstein is currently recovering, the former film producer did not attend the hearing.
Exactly which charges are involved is not currently publicly known. Weinstein’s lawyer stated after the hearing that a jury had probably reviewed three cases of alleged sex crimes. Two of them are said to have occurred in the mid-2000s, a third in 2016. The lawyer also does not yet know how many or which charges are involved.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in 2020 for rape and sexual assault. The conviction was overturned in April 2024 due to procedural errors. A new trial is scheduled to begin in November. According to the report, prosecutors will file a motion to consolidate the additional charges with the original indictment. Weinstein’s side is pushing for the cases to be tried separately.

Weinstein is still in custody due to another 16-year sentence in California in 2022, but is currently in a hospital. According to US media reports, the former film mogul was taken there a few days ago for emergency heart surgery. According to his lawyer, Weinstein has “a kind of shunt in his chest.” The 72-year-old needs to be drained of fluids and is connected to infusions and oxygen.
It is unclear how long Weinstein will remain in this condition, but if the doctors give their permission, he will attend another hearing scheduled for September 18. The lawyer stated in court that his client allegedly “almost died”.
