During the opening, Emilio Bustamante and Alberto Ovejero, directors of the terminal, shared their general vision of the transformation and evolution of the port. The main focus was the transition to a multimodal model, which not only boosts the development of foreign trade but also encourages the growth of both local and regional companies. “The terminal is a key pillar for the development of Mar Del Plata, not only because of the generation of employment but also because of the revitalization it provides to the local economy and the opening of new international markets it enables,” they stated.

The first interventions offered an updated view of the state of the port, addressing the impact of the growth of maritime trade in the region. Marcos Gutiérrez, President of the Port Consortium, agreed that “In order to develop a multimodal port, fishing must continue to grow, the naval industry must be able to generate and build new objectives and, above all, other industrial sectors must be able to establish themselves in our port. In this sense, this 4th Port Meeting generated future projections that will be extremely valuable for the city.”
The day included testimonies from key companies operating in the port, as well as from entities that contribute to the economic and logistical development of the region. In this regard, Lamb Weston announced that it plans to open its plant in the Mar del Plata industrial park in April/May 2025. The arrival of the Canadian firm in the city represented an investment of 240 million dollars only in the first stage of construction of the plant, which involved the creation of more than 3,200 direct and indirect jobs. “One of the main reasons for choosing this city to install our plant was its human capital. We need capable people and we have them in this city,” said Alejandro Lute (Senior Director Operations Latin America) and Eduardo Simonello (Senior Director Supply Chain Latin America) of Lamb Weston, one of the main producers of French fries in the world, which according to projections will allocate 80% of the production of this plant to export and will leave by ship.
At the presentation “Argentina in TEUS”, Jorge La Torre, General Manager of CMA CGM, spoke about the main challenges facing the city, including infrastructure, the development of export and import volumes, and the conversion of truck cargo to containers. He also highlighted during his presentation the potential of the port of Mar del Plata, which could increase its current movement from 2,000 containers to 20,000 containers in the future.
A key topic in the discussions was the implementation of Green Ports and their challenges. Benjamin Tarelli (Environmental Engineer) spoke about the reduction of the carbon footprint and sustainability, a path that ports around the world are heading towards.
Finally, and in line with the potential of a growing city, Florencia Miconi (CEO of Imasa Constructora) presented the innovative DAD Project, which seeks to transform the city through the Mar del Plata Art and Design District, a new development area with mixed uses that will have stores, offices, housing, hotels, and that seeks to unite the port with the city.
The event concluded with the closing of Emilio Bustamante and Alberto Ovejero accompanied by the Municipal Mayor Guillermo Montenegro, who shared his vision on the positive impact that a multimodal port implies for the city and its local economy, being part and protagonist of it.
