The prosecution accused Justin Timberlake of driving while drunk. Now the pop star has admitted guilt – at least partially.
Pop star Justin Timberlake has pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges in a court in the US state of New York. The 43-year-old had previously agreed to a deal with the district attorney’s office in Suffolk County, east of New York: Timberlake pleaded guilty in court, but only to the lesser offense – driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to CNN, the musician must now complete 25 hours of community service and pay a $500 fine. His driver’s license will also be revoked for 90 days.
Smell of alcohol, unsteady on feet
Timberlake was arrested and charged with drunk driving in mid-June in Sag Harbor, about 150 kilometers east of the metropolis of New York. According to a police report, he failed to stop at a stop sign, among other things. According to a court document, an officer said Timberlake’s breath smelled strongly of alcohol. The pop singer was unsteady on his feet.
After a night at the police station, Timberlake was released. The so-called “mug shot” published by the police, the police photo of the global star looking seriously into the camera in custody, went viral on the Internet. The 43-year-old is married to actress Jessica Biel and has two children.
Not meeting your own high standards
Timberlake appeared at the hearing in the court in the affluent town of Sag Harbor on Friday wearing a black shirt under a black cardigan. He wore a double-row pearl necklace around his neck and when he stepped in front of the waiting media after the hearing, he took off his sunglasses.
“I try to hold myself to very high standards,” said Timberlake. But in this case he failed. “Don’t get behind the wheel of a car if you’ve only had one drink,” he told his fans. He made a mistake, “but I hope that everyone watching and listening right now can learn from that mistake.”
The lawyer’s defense attorney, Ed Burke, emphasized that his client had only had one drink in two hours that June night. He was not drunk and was “polite, cooperative and respectful” towards the police.
