Actor Robert De Niro takes stock and talks about the time he has left, his seven children and his gravestone.
Robert De Niro turned 81 in August. The actor is not panicking. In the latest episode of the American talk show “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace” he speaks positively about aging.
TV presenter Chris Wallace (76) asks the screen star whether he hates the process of getting older and the two-time Oscar winner answers coolly: “I don’t have a choice.” He sums up: “Things just change.” De Niro gives Wallace the advice: “Embrace it [das Altern, Anm. d. Red.]. Embrace whatever you have been given.”
This should be carved on his tombstone
During the conversation with Wallace, De Niro also talks about how he would describe himself as the father of his seven children: adopted daughter Drena (53), Raphael (47), twins Julian and Aaron (28), Elliot (26), Helen (12), and baby Gia, whom he had with his current partner Tiffany Chen (65) in April 2023. “I’m doing my best,” he says, admitting with a postscript that he seems to think about dying every now and then: “I’m going to have it written on my tombstone: ‘I did my best.'”
“I was busy, of course, but I always loved my children,” he says, but also mentions the difficulty of being a famous actor who was constantly on the move and at the same time wanted to be a caring father.
In an earlier interview in October 2023, when asked about his advanced age, the “The Irishman” actor emphasized that he now thinks more about time. In particular, about how “everything in life becomes more important.” De Niro: “Everything I do is time-relevant. Whatever I want to do in two years, I’d better think about doing it now.”
