The drama “The Life of Chuck” by director Mike Flanagan is the winning film at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This was announced by the head of the festival, Cameron Bailey, at an awards ceremony in Toronto.
The adaptation of a short story by author Stephen King, with Tom Hiddleston in the lead role, thrilled audiences in the Canadian metropolis. Hiddleston plays the accountant Charles “Chuck” Krantz, whose life story is told chronologically backwards. Other roles include Mark Hamill, Karen Gillan and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Second place went to “Emilia Perez” by director Jacques Audiard, starring Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, and third place went to Sean Baker’s “Anora.” The audience voted “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal” as best documentary, while the Midnight Madness award went to Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore.
In contrast to festivals such as Cannes, Berlin or Venice, the winning films in Toronto are not chosen by a jury. Instead, the audience votes for their favourite films. This year, over 250 films competed for the audience’s favour at the ten-day TIFF.
