Following serious allegations of abuse against the US rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, he has now been arrested in New York.
Sean “Diddy” Combs (54) was arrested on Monday evening (September 16) in New York City. This was reported by several US media outlets. According to the “New York Times”, a grand jury had previously brought charges against the rapper. The exact charges were initially unclear. Combs has been under investigation for months for sexual abuse and human trafficking.
Lawyer defends Combs: “He is not a criminal”
As law enforcement sources told the US portal “TMZ”, the 54-year-old was arrested by officials from the Department of Homeland Security in a hotel in Midtown Manhattan late Monday evening and taken to the FBI’s Manhattan field office. Authorities had originally planned to arrest Combs on Tuesday, but “something happened that led” federal officials to take him into custody earlier.
US Attorney Damian Williams said, according to TMZ, that Combs was arrested in connection with a sealed indictment from the Southern District of New York. This is due to be unsealed on Tuesday. Combs’ attorney Marc Agnifilo said: “We are disappointed in the US Attorney’s decision to continue what we believe is an unjustified prosecution of Mr. Combs. Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is a music icon, a self-made entrepreneur, a loving family man and a proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children and advocating for the advancement of the black community.”
He said he was an “imperfect human being” but not a criminal. Combs also “fully cooperated with this investigation” and traveled voluntarily to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Agnifilo added: “Please reserve your judgment until you know all the facts. These are the actions of an innocent man who has nothing to hide and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.”
House searches at the end of March
On March 25, authorities searched the music mogul’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami. Combs, who is also known as Diddy and Puff Daddy, was accused by an ex-girlfriend in November 2023 of engaging in sex trafficking and abusing her. In May, a disturbing video from 2016 circulated in which he attacked her in a hotel hallway. The musician then declared that he had “hit rock bottom” and was “not looking for excuses” for his “inexcusable” behavior. He took “full responsibility.” After the ex-girlfriend, other people had also accused the rapper of sexual assault, including gang rape, and reported sex parties at which women were drugged and abused by Combs.
