Ben Whishaw: He does not expect Bond to return as Q

Will the next James Bond have to rely on completely new personnel? This is what Ben Whishaw, the last Q actor to date, believes.

The question of which actor will be Daniel Craig’s (56) successor to the James Bond film, and will be allowed to sip his martinis shaken rather than stirred, is still unanswered. And the other stars of the popular action series are apparently also being kept in the dark about what will happen to them for the time being. This is suggested by the statements of Ben Whishaw (43), who has played the latest version of the brilliant inventor Q since 2012’s Skyfall. , however, the actor does not expect to be allowed to invent practical gadgets for Bond again.

“I don’t think I’ll be in the next part,” he told BBC reporter Laura Kuenssberg. On the contrary: “I think they’ll start all over again. With a new cast, a completely new cast.” At the same time, however, he insisted that he didn’t know any details about the plans and that these were just his personal guesses.

It would be a novelty

The fact that the entire cast apart from the title character changes completely would be a first for the film series that has existed since 1962. This is not only, but to a large extent, due to “Bond” veteran Desmond Llewelyn (1914-1999), who played Bond’s Quartermaster aka Q from 1963 until his death in 1999. With the exception of Daniel Craig, he served under every other 007 – from Sean Connery (1930-2020) to George Lazenby (85) and Roger Moore (1927-2017) to Timothy Dalton (78) and Pierce Brosnan (71).

But there was also a parallel in the change from Brosnan to Craig, whose 007 debut “Casino Royale” was generally perceived as a more down-to-earth reboot of the series: Dame Judi Dench (89) had taken over as MI6 head M in Brosnan’s first outing in “GoldenEye” in 1995 and held the role until Craig’s “Skyfall” before Ralph Fiennes (61) took over the position.

But the greatest interest is, of course, in the James Bond role. Since Craig resigned, new favorites to succeed him have been circulating online. Most recently, “Kick-Ass” actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson (34) was allegedly in pole position, but this rumor was also denied at the beginning of the year.
