Nelson Valente: If I do a racconto I think that I traveled and worked in Spain, I had covid, I came back and the truth is that I worked in a pandemic, so I am grateful. Beyond the natural anguish, it was and is an achievement. We are now reviving “Díganlo con mimica” with the incorporation of Eugenia Guerty instead of Iliana Calabró and that necessarily transforms. Because when the cast is reconfigured and an actor is changed, new things appear. Each actor brings their own, their proposal, and that modifies the entire system.
Q.: In addition, he returns to the Picadero on Sunday with two works.
NV: Yes, we call it among ourselves the Valente Sundays, with “I only called to tell you that I love you”, which toured Barcelona and will return there in October, and “El loco y la camisa” in its 13th season.
Q.: What other projects do you have?
NV: I’m rehearsing an adaptation of “Ricardo III” by Mariano Saba based on Shakespeare’s play that we premiered at the Callejón in February. This version takes place in a town in the province of Buenos Aires and its location is a blacksmith’s warehouse, which was a blade factory and is transferred to a contemporary family. And in March the premiere of “Los Perros”, which has already passed through Barcelona and arrives with the local version.
Q.: How is this “Ricardo III” in a cutlery?
NV: The story takes place in what was once a factory and remains in the hands of three brothers. It focuses on the theme of evil. Richard III was always the archetype of the bad guy and psychopath, and the work reflects on whether these characters should be classified as evil or if they are a symptom of a society. They are that through which evil expresses itself. These characters strictly bring out the bad that is in each of us
Q.: What is “The Dogs” about?
NV: On a woman’s 40th birthday, while traveling on the subway, she has an unexpected encounter with a homeless man. When she gets home, her husband and in-laws are waiting for her with a surprise party and that night she has an epiphany in which she wonders if the life she leads is the one she wants. This explodes the family system in a comedy that, like all my comedies, ends badly. In Barcelona the Argentine theater is well seen, the performance is especially surprising, due to its naturalness, the public highlights that, that they are invited to get into the work, to believe what is happening, and that is the merit of the actors.
Q.: Did you feel the bottleneck of many works waiting for the room?
NV: I had no problem finding a room, but I feel that it is a time when we have to put up with this step until the wave of infections passes. We’re all the same, it’s hard to bring an audience at this time because people get scared, but little by little it will loosen up. The season is going to start at some point.
Q.: How do you see the commercial scene that only admits light comedies and does not encourage more complex themes?
NV: “The dogs” actually maintains a balance because it is a difficult subject but treated with humor, then whoever wants to go a little deeper can do so. I went to see “Precoz” at the independent show and it’s also a tough drama, but the audience is delighted and the play works. And it is true that it did not find space in the commercial and I think it is a bit of a prejudice of the producers. Or maybe the public is predisposed to see that kind of material.
