Copyright dispute surrounding “Flowers”: Miley Cyrus worried about Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus is currently dealing with a copyright dispute. But her biggest concern is not the lawsuit, but her ex.

It seems to be an open secret that Miley Cyrus (31) is taking a stand against her ex-husband, actor Liam Hemsworth (34), in her hit song “Flowers”. But the singer has never publicly commented on it. Now the song is back in the spotlight due to a lawsuit filed by an investment platform. Cyrus is alleged to have copied her colleague Bruno Mars (38) for the successful single. Miley Cyrus is less nervous about the lawsuit itself than about the fact that she would be forced to confirm for the first time that the song is about Hemsworth.

“When I Was Your Man” is said to have been their joint song

An insider told the British news portal: “Miley isn’t too concerned about the lawsuit herself, but anyone who knows Miley knows that this song was written as a kind of healing for Liam.” The singer was married to Liam Hemsworth from 2018 to 2020. Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man” reportedly played an important role in their relationship: The actor is said to have played it for Cyrus at their wedding in December 2018.

The lyrics from “Flowers” were a response to the song – “because it was Liam’s song specifically for her. It was just important to her that he knew it was directed at him,” said the source. Cyrus originally wrote the song as a slow love ballad and not the fast, upbeat song it is now. She is worried that she will now have to reveal her inspiration for “Flowers”. “She has no problem saying it was a response to Bruno’s song, but it is very upsetting to have to say publicly and on tape that it was specifically about Liam.”

According to the insider, when Miley Cyrus released her song on January 13, 2023 – her ex-partner’s birthday – she was not focused on the similarities between the two songs. Instead, she was very focused on poking fun at Hemsworth and his alleged affair, which overshadowed everything else.

This is what the lawsuit against Miley Cyrus is about

According to documents obtained by US portal TMZ, Tempo Music Investments claims the hit single has “many musical similarities” to Mars’ 2012 ballad “When I Was Your Man”. The investment platform emphasizes in the documents that it owns a share of the copyright to Mars’ track and claims that the chorus, harmony, melody, chord progressions and lyrics of “Flowers” were “intentionally” taken from the song. The lawsuit states: “Due to the combination and numerous similarities between the two recordings, it cannot be denied that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man’.”

Both songs were hits for the artists, each reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. “When I Was Your Man” was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014, but “Flowers” was even more successful. The song won the Record Of The Year award – an award that honors songwriters – and also won the Best Pop Solo Performance award, for which Mars was once nominated. “Flowers” was also nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammys, but did not win the trophy.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met in 2009 while filming and had an on-off relationship afterwards. In 2012, the two stars got engaged but split up again briefly. They eventually got married later, but the marriage did not last long. Since 2021, the singer has been in a relationship with musician Maxx Morando (25).
