Lady Gaga explains why she has never explicitly commented on the rumors that she is a man throughout her career.
In 2011, Lady Gaga (38) said in an interview: “Why the hell would I waste my time and issue a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care and neither do I.” At the time, she was asked about rumors about her gender. Over ten years later, the singer commented on her statement from back then as part of the Netflix series “What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates” and explained why she never denied the rumor.
In a conversation with Bill Gates (68), she says: “When I was in my early 20s, there was a rumor that I was a man.” At that time, she was traveling all over the world, touring, promoting her albums. “I was asked about it in almost every interview – because there were manipulated images on the Internet.”
She has deliberately never answered these questions clearly for a reason. “I never considered myself a victim of this lie and thought: what about a child who is accused of something like this and then thinks that a public figure like me feels shame?” In her view, it is not always in other people’s best interests to deny a rumor, said Lady Gaga. “In this case, I was trying to provoke thought and cause unrest in other ways. I was trying to use the misinformation to create another disruptive factor.”
“I’m used to lies about me”
Over the course of her career, she has become accustomed to dealing with rumors about her: “I’ve been used to having lies printed about me since I was 20 years old. I’m an artist. I find it kind of funny.”
In 2008, Lady Gaga made her international breakthrough with her debut album “The Fame”. Since then, she has made a name for herself not only as a singer, but also as an actress. From October 3rd, she will be seen in “Joker: Folie à Deux” as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix (49) as Arthur Fleck.
