Dresden DJ Purple Disco Machine turned down what is probably the biggest pop star in the world. It wasn’t a big deal for him – even though it made headlines in the media.
Dresden DJ and producer Purple Disco Machine believes that his rejection of a collaboration with Taylor Swift was “no big deal at all”. The issue was only blown up afterwards, Tino Piontek, the DJ’s real name, told the German Press Agency. He doesn’t believe that Swift herself even knew about the request.
Her management had asked for a remix of a song – and reacted irritably to the cancellation. No one had ever canceled before, the 44-year-old remembers. But the cancellation had nothing to do with the music, which he likes to listen to.
Offer at the wrong time
The offer simply came at the wrong time. “I was fully into the album process and didn’t want to interrupt it to earn some extra money,” said Piontek. He can imagine working together in the future: “It could be that they ask again in a year and then it just works out. Then I’ll do it.”
Conversely, Piontek himself has also had to accept rejections. For example, with The Weeknd: Piontek had already finished a remix for the Canadian songwriter, as the Dresden native explained. Then the decision was made against a remix album and the song remained in the drawer.
Piontek won a Grammy in 2023 for a remix of the track “About Damn Time” by US singer Lizzo.
Purple Disco Machine enjoyed international success with songs such as “Hypnotized” and “Fireworks”. In October he will tour Europe with his third album “Paradise”.
