Courteney Cox: “Monica is healthy and happy”

On the 30th anniversary of “Friends”: Courteney Cox on the legacy of the cult sitcom – and a possible future.

30 years ago, in September 1994, “Friends” was launched in the USA. The cult sitcom ran for ten years and is still firmly anchored in (pop) cultural memory today thanks to its presence on streaming platforms. “Friends” star Courteney Cox (60) spoke about the anniversary at a charity event. The actress can hardly believe that it has been three decades since she first played the role of Monica. “It’s just crazy for me because it feels like time is passing so quickly and I don’t even notice it,” she told “People”.

Courteney Cox: “Monica is healthy and happy”

“Monica is alive and well,” said Courteney Cox when asked about her most famous role. She admitted that she hasn’t watched an episode of “Friends” in a while. But whenever she comes across an episode, she can’t help but watch it to the end.

“This show is incredible,” Cox said of “Friends.” Every joke holds up, all the characters are just incredible, and we [hatten] the best authors in the world. I am lucky that it continues across all generations. And that is really a stroke of luck.”

However, “Friends” is controversial among the young Generation Z. After all, the cast around Cox, Jennifer Aniston (55), David Schwimmer (57) and the late Matthew Perry (1969-2023) is anything but diverse. There are also jokes about homosexuality.

This is what Courteney Cox thinks about a reboot of “Friends”

But Courteney Cox is skeptical about a reboot or anything else that “has a ‘re’ in front of it.” “It’s hard to remake something,” she told People. Especially something like Friends, which “was so special.”

Most recently, series creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane reported that fans are constantly writing to them, wanting a sequel to “Friends,” for example with the children of Monica and Co.
