It’s not razor-sharp horror

Those were times when masks were primarily part of a collective experience of fear in the cinema: Yesterday, exactly 25 years and 25 days ago, “Scream” started in the USA. From there, the horror film with comedy and ghost-mask killers revolutionized its genre. Since yesterday, more than ten years after part four, the anniversary film “Scream 5” has been running in our cinemas. The first not to be directed by Wes Craven. He died of cancer in 2015 at the age of 76.

Now it was up to US director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (“Ready or Not”). Their constraints were not without: “Scream 5” has to be a film that picks up the fans of the first hour and can win new ones. Those who weren’t born in 1996 and regard the landline phone call that Drew Barrymore made to kick off his doom as antiquated practice. Doing justice to the nostalgia and the original, it still plays a role – parallel to the hectic typing on the smartphone.

Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) is the young woman who is about to be struck down in a fancy Woodsboro home. It’s tougher than you think, the scene full of promising quotes, the beginning promising. He lures her estranged sister Sam (Melissa Barrera) and her sweetheart Richie (Jack Quaid, the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan) back to the small US town. The killer’s lust for murder has long since been unleashed.

The viewer’s appetite for horror will take a hit as Tara’s friends, the millennial lovers and the original characters look to put an end to it: David Arquette, 50, as Dewey, Courteney Cox, 57, as Gale, and Neve Campbell, 48. as Sydney. Despite well-placed moments of shock, the hustle and bustle of the generations comes to a standstill or gets confused.

“Scream” is loved for addressing and parodying the genre rules of horror. Part five drives this to excess, you think you are in a film theory seminar. It’s still worth persevering: the finale is exquisite, here the blood freezes in the veins and the fan’s heart suddenly beats faster.
