In letter to California’s governor: More than 100 celebrities against AI law

More than 100 Hollywood stars are writing a letter asking California’s governor to sign a law that would more strictly regulate AI.

More than 125 Hollywood actors, directors and producers, as well as music artists, have written a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom calling on him to sign a bill on artificial intelligence. Senator Scott Wiener’s draft would require developers of artificial intelligence models to take safety measures to prevent disasters.

“Serious AI threats used to be the stuff of science fiction. But that’s over,” the letter to Newsom says. “Even though the billionaire opponents of SB 1047 [der Gesetzentwurf, Anm. d. Red.] While some dismiss these concerns as fantasy, many of the world’s leading engineers, scientists and policymakers warn the opposite.”

These stars signed the letter

The signatories of the letter include “Lost” producer JJ Abrams (58), “Bridgerton” producer Shonda Rhimes (54), director Judd Apatow (56), songwriter Dianne Warren (68), actress Jane Fonda (86) and actors Mark Hamill (72), Mahershala Ali (50), Ramy Youssef (33), Alec Baldwin (66), Pedro Pascal (49), Mark Ruffalo (56) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (43). SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher (66) also signed the letter.

“We elected you”

They also appeal to Newsom: “We elected you. We want to continue to believe that you are a leader who stands up for the well-being of all, not just a few Silicon Valley giants.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt also said in a statement: “In Silicon Valley, they like to say, ‘Move fast and break things.’ But with a technology as powerful as this, maybe the saying should be, ‘Move as fast as you can and be careful not to break anything.'” Mark Ruffalo explained: “It only makes sense to provide a new technology with a minimum level of oversight and some basic guardrails, rather than waiting for damage to occur and then doing something.”

The actors and actresses of the SAG-AFTRA union and the screenwriters of the WAG had already gone on strike for several months last year – partly out of concern about how film studios might deal with AI.

The bill SB 1047 has been hotly debated in California for some time. Companies such as Meta and OpenAI have spoken out against it. In addition, several Democratic politicians have spoken out against it. The proposal, however, is supported by various AI scientists, Tesla boss Elon Musk (53) and more than 100 former employees of AI companies such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Meta.
