Music: When the British Prime Minister sticks to Beethoven

Britain’s new Prime Minister talks about what inspired him in his childhood – and when he still listens to Brahms and Beethoven today.

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer (62) sometimes finds comfort in German composers. In his childhood, he enjoyed playing the flute alongside football, Starmer said at a party conference in Liverpool. He is sure that everyone knows the feeling when music captivates you or when you are touched by a book, painting or play.

“Even today I stick to Beethoven or Brahms in those moments when – how shall I put it – the reviews are not so good,” said Starmer, then joked, with a view to the reviews of his party conference speech, that he would have Shostakovich ready for tomorrow. Starmer has been British Prime Minister since July.

In his youth, he took music lessons at the renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Starmer once told the Times newspaper that it was a fantastic opportunity for a boy like him from a working class background. But music was never a career option for him, but a lifelong passion.
