Wiesn: Jens Lehmann has to hand over his driving licence after drunk driving

New trouble for Jens Lehmann: Because the former goalkeeper got behind the wheel while drunk after a visit to the Oktoberfest, he has lost his driving license.

Former national goalkeeper Jens Lehmann had to hand over his driving license after visiting the Oktoberfest. As the tabloid newspaper “Bild” reports, the 54-year-old was stopped by the police in the Munich district of Sendling during the night from Sunday to Monday while driving a car. When stopped, he appeared to be drunk. He had previously celebrated in a tent at the Oktoberfest and had also drunk a few beers, the report says.

Anne Leiding, spokeswoman for the Munich public prosecutor’s office, confirmed the incident to the newspaper: “Mr. Lehmann was stopped by the police on September 23rd at around 1:30 a.m. due to his unusual driving behavior in a car in the Munich city center.” According to the senior public prosecutor, the officers noticed Lehmann’s “distinct smell of alcohol and unsteady gait.” As a breathalyzer test carried out on site did not produce any usable results, a blood sample was ordered. The results of this were still pending at the time of publication. The police confiscated the ex-keeper’s driver’s license. “Our investigations into the suspicion of drunk driving are ongoing,” Leiding is quoted as saying.

Lehmann had previously had trouble with the law

It is not the first time that the long-time professional has had trouble with the law. In July 2022, he is said to have sawed off a roof beam on his neighbor’s property with a chainsaw because it was obstructing his view of Lake Starnberg. In addition, he had to answer to court for attempted parking fee fraud and insulting police officers, among other things. In 2023, he was sentenced to a fine.

During his active time, the 61-time international played for FC Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, FC Arsenal and VfB Stuttgart, among others. Most recently, he hit the headlines at the 2024 European Championships with comments about the dyed hair of international player Robert Andrich. Because Andrich dyed his hair pink before the quarter-final against Spain, Lehmann speculated about “personality problems” with Andrich and said: .

Lehmann has not yet commented publicly on the latest allegations.
