Jens Lehmann is still considered a German World Cup hero today: it is unforgettable how he triumphed in the penalty shootout against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the 2006 World Cup on home soil after reading a cheat sheet. But the goalkeeper has also been surrounded by scandals for decades.
He has been in court several times. Most recently he had to pay a hefty fine of 420,000 euros – he had entered his neighbor’s property with a chainsaw and sawed through a beam.
He also didn’t always behave well on the football field; he once ripped the headband off a teammate’s head and the glasses off a fan’s nose.
Perhaps the negative highlight of his recent past: a racist outburst towards former national player Dennis Aogo. He also made questionable comments about Thomas Hitzlsperger’s coming out.
And now Lehmann is in trouble again because of his drunken drive after Oktoberfest. No wonder English football fans nicknamed him “Mad Jens” during his career.
