Luke Mockridge received a lot of criticism for his disparaging statements about disabled athletes. He has now dealt with the incident in his new show.
At his first show in Germany since his disparaging comments about disabled athletes, comedian Luke Mockridge addressed the scandal several times in songs and jokes. At the presentation of his new solo program in Munich, for example, he sang: “I know I screwed up, you expected a lot more from me.” At the same time, he complained that everyone had turned away from him after he became known “for bashing disabled people” – and then, with a lot of support from the audience, emphasized: “But I’m back again!”
In August, Mockridge, together with the presenters Shayan Garcia and Nizar Akremi, made derogatory comments about disabled sports and mocked the athletes in the podcast “Die Deutschen”. The episode received greater attention shortly before the end of the Paralympics and caused harsh public criticism. Although Mockridge subsequently apologized to the athletes, the TV channel Sat.1 nevertheless took a planned new quiz show with the 35-year-old off the program.
He also lost his management in Germany, and his Austrian agency terminated their collaboration at the end of his tour. In response to criticism of his jokes, Mockridge himself canceled the first two stops on his new “Funny Times” tour in Bünde in East Westphalia and Paderborn, and several stages canceled their long-planned events. Ultimately, the tour kicked off last week in Vienna, where the show, like in Munich, was met with much applause and without protests.
