Hannah Gutierrez-Reed: Weapons Master of “Rust” remains in custody

Weapons master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed loaded the revolver with live ammunition on the set of the western “Rust” – and is therefore in prison. Her request for release has now been rejected.

Almost three years after the fatal shooting of a camerawoman on the set of the western “Rust”, the verdict against the gun master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed who was responsible for the pistol has been confirmed. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer decided on Monday (local time) that the 18 months in prison for negligent homicide were legal. Gutierrez-Reed had requested that the verdict against her be overturned or that the trial be reopened.

In the western “Rust” with actor Alec Baldwin in the leading role, 27-year-old Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for procuring dummies and blank cartridges. During filming in the US state of New Mexico in October 2021, camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by a bullet from a revolver held by Baldwin. Director Joel Souza was injured by the same bullet.

Gutierrez-Reed had accidentally loaded the deadly weapon with a live bullet, the origin of which was never clarified. At the beginning of the year, the young woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for manslaughter.

Alec Baldwin’s trial has been dropped

In a spectacular twist, the trial against Baldwin, who also had to stand trial for negligent homicide, was dropped in July. Judge Marlowe Sommer justified the decision by saying that evidence had been intentionally withheld from the defense. Specifically, police and prosecutors are said to have withheld bullets that may have been linked to Hutchins’ death.

After the trial against Baldwin was dropped, Gutierrez, who had already been convicted, also requested that her case be reopened. Her lawyers called for her client’s conviction to be overturned “immediately” or for a new trial to be scheduled.

The judge now rejected this request. The defendant did not demonstrate that the evidence would have “reasonably likely” led to a “different verdict” if it had been presented at trial, she said in her written decision. Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyers have appealed the gun master’s guilty verdict several times, but have always failed with requests for release or a new trial.
