US actor John Amos has died after more than 50 years in the film business. Amos’ son mourns the loss of his best friend and hero.
The US actor John Amos (1939-2024), known for his roles in “Good Times”, “Roots” and “The Prince of Zamunda”, among others, has died. He was 84 years old.
John Amos had a heart of gold
His son KC Amos confirmed that his father died of natural causes in Los Angeles on August 21st: “He was a man with the kindest heart, a heart of gold… and he was loved all over the world.”
KC Amos continued, “Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works as an actor in television and film.” His father loved working as an actor all his life. “He was my father, my best friend and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support during this time.”
The sad news comes just over a year after Amos was hospitalized after fluid in his lower body caused problems with his heart. At the time, a representative for Amos said doctors were able to remove all of the fluid and he was on the mend.
“Never thought I would live this long”
In 1970, Amos, who was born in the US state of New Jersey, made his television debut on “The Bill Cosby Show” and achieved his breakthrough on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. After his engagement ended in 1973, he became a star as James Evans Sr. in Good Times. In 1977, Amos starred in the miniseries “Roots,” which earned him an Emmy nomination.
“The truth is, when I started acting, I never thought I would live this long, let alone be an actor”, . “I’ve had a blessed career, and I attribute that to my faith in God and the fact that I was raised right.”
