Students, teachers and university authorities from all over the country demanded the enactment of the university financing law and an increase in the budget project presented for 2025. “Only half of the minimum resources claimed to function were contemplated,” they warned.
In a massive march, students and authorities of public national universities demanded more budget to resolve the crisis they are going through. The president of the Argentine University Federation (FUA), Piera Fernandezgave a strong closing speech and warned that if the university budget for 2025 sent by the Government is not modified “The continuity is at stake” of the houses of higher education and the scientific system.

“A budget is above all a declaration of principles. And the one presented (by the Government for 2025) is far from what the country needs,” Fernández accused and then described the worrying situation that the university system is experiencing. “We want to warn you about the seriousness that the problem has. If the project for 2025 is not modified, the situation of the universities and the scientific system will be much more serious than what we are going through today. What will be at stake is its continuity. Neither more nor less than that,” he said.

Then the president of the FUA added: “Never before has what requested by the university system been so far from what the Government proposes for its treatment. Only half of the minimum resources required to function were contemplated“. Faced with this situation, the student leader questioned the authorities and maintained that “it is a mistake to understand what the State allocates to education, universities and scientific development as an expense and not as an investment.”

Against the veto of the university financing law
In the list of claims, Fernández included the law voted by Congress a few days ago. “We students from all over Argentina ask you in a cry for help: enact the university financing law!”he demanded. And then he clarified that it is not an exaggerated sum. On the contrary, he described it as “a reasonable law that solves the problems while taking care of the State and its economy” that demands only 0.14% of the GDP.
President Javier Milei announced that he will veto the entire law. The deadline to do so is tomorrow. Some sectors of the ruling party, in voiceover, speculate that it could be done partially. Whether totally or partially, the university community has already announced that they will insist that Congress reject the veto.
This is why the president of the FUA expressly requested that the president not veto the university financing law. “It is with more science and public higher education and excellence, not with less. If in a context of scarcity, when priorities must be weighed, these areas are not privileged, the development of the Nation and the possibility of reversing its deep inequalities will only be a utopia,” he said.
