His parents didn’t really support his career, says actor Hugh Grant. “My mother was a churchgoer and wanted me to be Archbishop of Canterbury.”
Actor Hugh Grant (64) may have followed the well-known advice that you should disappoint your parents in order to be happy. The film star’s parents didn’t seem to think much of his career choice, as he told the British news agency PA on the BBC program “The Graham Norton Show”.
“They were not supportive at all,” Grant said. “My mother was a churchgoer and wanted me to be Archbishop of Canterbury.” In his parents’ world, show business meant nothing.
“I remember my mother – when Four Weddings and a Funeral came out – went to a dinner party with like-minded people and, when asked about her two sons, said, ‘One is an investment banker and the other is a movie star.'” A another guest said: “How interesting – which bank?” This is the world I grew up in.”
Return of “Bridget Jones” to the cinema
Grant is known for films such as “Notting Hill”, “Love Actually”, “Wonka” and the “Bridget Jones” film adaptations. The new film “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” will be released in cinemas in February 2025. “It’s a good and moving script – it’s extremely funny but very sad,” Grant said, according to PA. There was no obvious role for him, but he was squeezed into the script.
