Claudia Effenberg: Her husband Stefan saved her after a pulmonary embolism

Claudia Effenberg had to go through some health problems last year. One of them was a pulmonary embolism, which the player’s wife is now talking about.

It was her husband, ex-football professional Stefan Effenberg, who saved Claudia Effenberg’s life in December last year. The former model now tells the “Bild” newspaper. She suffered a pulmonary embolism on the third Advent of last year. “A week before Christmas. I will always celebrate my second birthday on this day. My husband Stefan found me lying unconscious in the hallway and immediately called the emergency doctor. He saved my life,” said Effenberg. A pulmonary embolism usually occurs when a blood clot blocks the lungs. The most common cause of this is thrombosis.

According to the player’s wife, she underwent emergency surgery. An event that, as she herself says, changed her marriage forever. “I have appreciated life in a whole new way since then. It was also a shock for Stefan. This experience has completely changed our marriage again. We have never been more intimate and loving with each other than we have been since last December,” said the 59-year-old. “Sometimes I hardly recognize my own husband. He is incredibly sweet and looks after me lovingly. He opens the covers for me in the evenings and puts a bottle of water next to the bed,” she also says.

After the pulmonary embolism, her husband was almost constantly afraid that something would happen again and he wouldn’t be able to help in time. “When I was in town and was late, he called straight away. But thank God he became more relaxed again,” said Effenberg.

The pulmonary embolism and subsequent operation were not the only health challenges Effenberg had to overcome. She also received an artificial hip joint and was on crutches for almost six months. The thought of death therefore concerns her differently today than before. “I used to think that if death came, then it would be okay. When I was really on the knife’s edge, I got scared. I don’t want to die yet! I want to grow old with my husband and see my children’s weddings. And I would be really happy if Lucia and Tommy made me their grandma,” she says.
