“Because unfortunately I’m not healthy”: SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert resigns

Kevin Kühnert resigns. In a letter, the SPD general secretary cited health reasons for the step.

SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert (35) announced his immediate resignation in a letter to his party. In the text, it says in reference to a “Spiegel” interview in which he said about the election campaign “Each of us must and will grow beyond ourselves in this campaign”: “I cannot grow beyond myself at the moment, Because unfortunately I am not healthy. I need the energy that is necessary for my office and an election campaign in order to get healthy again.

A few days ago he informed the party leaders Saskia Esken (63) and Lars Klingbeil (46) that he was resigning from the position of SPD general secretary today. “I would like to thank them both for their understanding and empathy, as well as for our particularly close and friendly collaboration.” He is also not available to run again in the upcoming federal election, Kühnert continued.

Decisions “hurt me”

These decisions took him a lot of effort “and they hurt me,” he writes, “because I put my heart and soul into my political work.” Kühnert added: “But they are still correct. I bear responsibility for myself – and for the SPD. By taking full care of my health now, I believe I can best meet my double responsibility.”

Kevin Kühnert took over the office of SPD General Secretary in 2021. He has also been a member of the Bundestag since 2021. Previously, among other things, he was federal chairman of the Jusos.
