Netflix canceled a series starring Jeff Goldblum just over a month after its premiere

Netflix has decided not to return to Olympus, canceling his series Kaos after a single season.

The decision comes about six weeks after the black comedy, based on Greek and Roman mythology and created by Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), made its debut on the streaming platform.

Kaos appeared on Netflix’s top 10 English series lists in each of its first four weeks, peaking at No. 3 for the week of September 2-8. It garnered 14.9 million views (measured by total viewing time divided by duration) during those weeks, a middling figure by the streaming service’s standards.

In the United States, the show had 3.34 million views as of September 8, according to Nielsen streaming ratings (view totals for subsequent weeks are not yet available).

What Kaos is about

Kaos places Greek and Roman mythology in a modern setting. The series stars Jeff Goldblum like Zeus, who has chained his fellow god Prometheus (Stephen Dillane) to a cliff as punishment for interfering in Zeus’ rule. Prometheus then seeks to overthrow Zeus with the help of three humans, Eurydice (Aurora Perrineau), Ariadne (Leila Farzad) and Keneo (Misia Butler). The cast also includes Janet McTeer, Cliff Curtis, David Thewlis, Rakie Ayola, Killian Scott, Nabhaan Rizwan, Debi Mazar, Mat Fraser, Stanley Townsend, Billie Piper and Suzy Eddie Izzard.

In an Instagram post, Perrineau said of the cancellation that “this hurts,” but praised her castmates and the show’s creative team. “They were all brilliant and unique. Each performance surprised and excited me,” he wrote. “I can’t believe I got to do this with all of you. We made something strange, dark, hilarious, disturbing and absolutely tragic, something completely human.”

Covell executive produced Kaos with Chris Fry, Georgi Banks-Davies, Jane Featherstone, John Woodward, Nina Lederman and Tanya Seghatchian.
