Musician: The Offspring frontman is a punk rocker and scientist

In addition to his music career, US punk rocker Dexter Holland conducts research in the field of molecular biology. His focus is on the fight against HIV, as he explains.

The US punk rocker Dexter Holland, known as the frontman of the successful band The Offspring, dedicates himself to science in addition to his musical career. The 58-year-old, who has a doctorate in molecular biology, tells the German edition of Playboy magazine that he is currently working on a scientific paper on microRNA. MicroRNA are tiny molecules that regulate genes and can thus influence processes in the body. “I discovered that human microRNA is able to mitigate HIV infections.”

Despite his scientific interests, he doesn’t regret choosing a career as a rock musician 30 years ago. With The Offspring, Holland has released eleven studio albums and sold more than 40 million records worldwide. When asked whether he would rather win a Grammy or a Nobel Prize, Holland replied: “I would like to take them both. The party would probably be more intense at the Grammy, but the Nobel Prize in Medicine would make me happiest.”
