After the unexpected death of record player Dieter Burdenski, those responsible at SV Werder Bremen offer their condolences.
Werder Bremen mourns the loss of its goalkeeping legend Dieter Burdenski (1950 – 2024). He played for the Hanseatic club for 16 years and was the German national goalkeeper until 1984. On Wednesday, October 9th, the record player died unexpectedly at the age of 73. With 444 Bundesliga games, he was on the pitch more often than any other SV Werder Bremen professional.
“Green-white for life,” as the Bundesliga eleventh-placed team’s anthem says, also applied to the Bremen native. In his 16-year career at Werder, “he only missed a handful of Bundesliga games during his entire time as number one,” .
After the triumphant 2-0 win in his first international match against Uruguay in Montevideo in 1977, Burdenski was long considered the best German goalkeeper behind Sepp Maier (80). In 1988 he celebrated the German championship with Werder Bremen and the highlight of his football career.
At the weekend “Budde” celebrated with Werder
The Werder team is devastated by the sudden death of their honorary captain. Last Saturday at the home game against SC Freiburg, Burdenski celebrated in the Weser Stadium. “The news of his death shocks us and makes us deeply sad,” says Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, President and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SV Werder Bremen. “Budde shaped our team for two decades and is undoubtedly one of the greatest Werder players of all time. We all valued him very much for his reliability, his always positive attitude to life, his passion for Werder, but also his critical spirit. Ours Thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”
Klaus Filbry, CEO of SV Werder Bremen, mourns: “Budde was an important pioneer for the success of our club in the various positions he held at Werder over 50 years. In recent years he has been responsible for Werder’s traditional team and through his tireless efforts he has made this an important figurehead of our club. We are incredibly sad, with Budde we are losing not only a great Werder player, but also a great person.”
Dieter Burdenski leaves behind son Fabian-Herbert (33), also a professional footballer. He is under contract with Spanish club Deportivo Xerez.
