Peter Maffay challenges Johannes Oerding on “Do you understand fun?” stop getting a tattoo. Not the rock legend’s only prank.
The two musicians Peter Maffay (75) and Johannes Oerding (42) have been close friends for many years. But in the upcoming edition of “Do You Know Fun?” (October 12th, 8:15 p.m., the first) will be the same. Behind the scenes of his concert at Berlin’s Waldbühne as part of his big farewell tour, Maffay is working together with “Do you understand fun?” host Barbara Schöneberger (50).
The rock legend asks Oerding for a special proof of friendship: a tattoo designed by Peter Maffay’s youngest daughter Anouk (5). He himself has already had the picture “engraved” with two scribbled figures that are supposed to represent Peter and John. The tattoo artist is even ready for Oerding. But that’s not all, Maffay also lets his friend down when they perform together. The 75-year-old suddenly leaves the stage. When the music for a Maffay song starts, Johannes is supposed to sing it alone without knowing the lyrics… In an interview with the news agency spot on news, Maffay looks back on this very special day and reveals that he feels good in the future has to be careful of his fellow musician.
How difficult was it for you to hire your good friend Johannes Oerding for “Do you understand fun?” to put in?
Peter Maffay: That took a bit of effort. It always depends a little on the day and whether someone is open to jokes or not. If our friendship had been damaged, the price would have been too high. But my worries were completely unfounded.
Did you come up with the idea for the pranks yourself?
Maffay: The idea of Johannes getting a tattoo came from the editorial team. When Johannes then thought he was safe, we tricked him a second time on stage during the concert in Berlin. The idea for this came from me.
Would you have previously believed that Johannes would actually get the friendship tattoo designed by your daughter?
Maffay: Yes, of course. That’s a matter of honor between friends!
How happy were you when Barbara Schöneberger broke up the prank?
Maffay: I was relieved that Johannes didn’t hold the two pranks against me, even though he was really stressed – especially during the second prank, when he was supposed to finish the concert in my place.
Do you fear his revenge?
Maffay: Yes, of course, I always have to be on guard now.
You already have some tattoos on your body. After the fake tattoo, maybe a real one will follow, inspired by your daughter?
Maffay: That could certainly be the case.
You have ended your touring life for the family. How did you experience your Farewell tour this year, what do you particularly remember?
Maffay: The encounter with the audience. This may sound trite, but it really is. There were three generations in front of the stage. That made me very happy.
On October 18th your illustrated book “No Way Too Far – 55 Years of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Pictures” will be published, and from October 11th your new album “We love Rock ‘n’ Roll: Leipzig 2024 – Live” will be available – two real passion projects for you?
Maffay: Absolutely. The book shows our long journey in pictures and the album shows how awesome the concerts on the Farewell Tour were.
What plans do you have now that you can spend more time with your family?
Maffay: Anouk is starting school next year. This is a drastic step in the life of a little person and that is what we are concentrating on now.
