Ethel Kennedy has died. Many mourn the human rights activist, who was a good friend of Barack Obama, among others.
The family of Ethel Kennedy (1928-2024) has announced that the human rights activist and widow of Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968) died on the morning of October 10th following complications from a previously suffered stroke. Many have come forward in the past few hours to say goodbye to the Kennedy matriarch, who, according to her relatives, leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Barack Obama and other personalities say goodbye
Among the well-known personalities who publicly bid farewell to Kennedy is former US President Barack Obama (63), who honored the activist with the Presidential Medal of Freedom around ten years ago. Regarding a picture of the award ceremony: “Ethel Kennedy was a dear friend with a passion for justice, an indomitable spirit and a great sense of humor.” She touched countless people around the world with kindness and grace and was “a symbol of enduring faith and hope, even in the face of unimaginable suffering.” He and his wife Michelle (60) are thinking of the Kennedy family and all the people “who loved this extraordinary woman.”
The incumbent US President Joe Biden (81) publishes a longer statement about the White House. In it he describes the deceased as “an American icon – a matriarch of optimism and moral courage, a symbol of resilience and service.” Ethel Kennedy, who had campaigned for human rights for decades, not only had a “heart of gold” but also “a backbone of steel”. In doing so, she inspired millions of Americans, including him and his wife Jill (73). The two were lucky to “call her a dear friend.” Her husband Robert F. Kennedy, who died in 1968, was also one of the politician’s heroes. “May God bless Ethel Kennedy, a dear friend and a great American.”
“Loss of an extraordinary woman”
Former President George HW Bush (1924-2018) and his First Lady Barbara (1925-2018) also maintained a long and close friendship with Ethel Kennedy: “They admired her lively spirit, her energy and her strong faith.” Condolences to the Kennedy family as they mourn “the loss of an extraordinary woman.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex-wife Maria Shriver (68). “What a life she led,” Shriver writes on Instagram, among other things. “What a huge family she created and leaves behind. I’m so glad I was able to laugh and share memories with her this summer.” Ethel Kennedy was “a unique aunt.” “She was fearless, funny, smart, an incredible athlete, a patriot, madly in love with my Uncle Bobby and dedicated to making our country better in every way.”
Kerry Kennedy (65) and Joe Kennedy III (44) made Ethel Kennedy’s death public on October 10th. The daughter and grandson of the deceased said, among other things, that it gave comfort to those left behind to know that she was now reunited with “the love of her life, our father Robert F. Kennedy,” as well as other deceased family members.
