For a long time, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani (90) remained tight-lipped about his future in his company. Now he is openly thinking about retirement. How exactly things will continue after that remains unclear.
At the age of 90, Italy’s famous fashion designer Giorgio Armani is openly thinking about retirement. “I can still give myself two or three years at the top of the company. No more, that would be negative,” said the fashion designer in an interview with the newspaper “Corriere della Sera”. Armani said he dreams of a future in which he no longer has to be the one saying “yes” or “no” and making the decisions.
For a long time, Armani left it unclear what would happen next with his successful brand, which the Italian has led for almost 50 years. He always kept a low profile about succession plans and neglected to groom a successor. When asked whether his current right-hand man, Leo Dell’Orco, might take over, Armani vaguely said in the interview that he had already established a clear structure for those who came in after him to follow.
Armani rejected all takeover offers
He could no longer afford to spend more than two or three years at the helm of Armani. “I don’t sleep at night. I no longer know the deep, peaceful sleep I used to have. Now I dream at night, and in my dreams I build my future,” Armani explained. In the future he sees himself in one of his houses, cared for by people he knows and is close to him.
Armani also revealed that he has recently received more “somewhat persistent” approaches to his company from potential external investors. “But at the moment I don’t see any options,” emphasized Armani. The fashion industry has been dominated by large luxury conglomerates for some time. Armani has always strictly rejected all takeover offers, citing the independence he values.
