Israel continues its offensive in Lebanon.
Israel captures Hezbollah soldier in southern Lebanon
The Israeli military said on Sunday it had captured a Hezbollah fighter in a tunnel in southern Lebanon, the first such announcement since it launched its ground offensive on September 30.
“The soldiers discovered the entrance to an underground tunnel in a building” that leads to an area where a fighter from the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah “was installed with weapons and material,” a statement said.
The army indicated that the militiaman surrendered to the soldiers, but did not specify when he was captured. The pro-Iran movement did not immediately comment.
The fighter was “interrogated on the spot” by soldiers, who later took him “to a detention center in Israel for further interrogation,” the army said.
A video released alongside the statement appears to show a group of Israeli soldiers speaking in Arabic with a man identified as a Hezbollah fighter as he slowly emerges from a tunnel.
“Get out of there before your life ends,” the soldiers are heard saying in the video. The militiaman offers the soldiers a cigarette, to which a soldier responds: “cigarettes, coffee and $5,000.”
The Israeli army launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon on September 30, where it says it is carrying out “selective bombings” in towns along the border.
He also claims to have detected several tunnel entrances under homes, including one that he claims was about 25 meters long and reached into Israeli territory.
