Street art: Taylor Swift immortalized with graffiti in Gelsenkirchen

In July, the US singer was in Gelsenkirchen for three concerts. A local artist has now immortalized the superstar in larger-than-life size in the old town.

Taylor Swift is back in Gelsenkirchen: The pop and country singer is not giving another concert for the time being, but she has been immortalized as huge graffiti on a house facade in the old town. The Gelsenkirchen artist Beni Veltum sprayed the larger-than-life portrait of the superstar on the wall together with his colleague Levin Tomala. Several media outlets had previously reported on the work of art.

When asked by the dpa, Veltum explained that he “let himself be infected by the euphoria at the last minute.” After the three Swift concerts in July, which had thrown the city into a state of emergency, he wanted to capture “the positive vibes, the energy” in the city. In cooperation with an association that supports street art in public spaces and the culture department of the city of Gelsenkirchen, an opportunity was quickly found.

According to the artist, the colorful portrait of the 34-year-old is around ten meters high and five meters wide. “I had to drop everything and follow my intuition,” said Veltum. Last week he completed it after ten days of work and drying time.

Gelsenkirchen became “Swiftkirchen” in July

In July, Taylor Swift stopped off for three concerts in Gelsenkirchen with her “The Eras Tour” and triggered a real hype. During this time, fans besieged the city, exchanged colorful bracelets and sang the singer’s hits even before the concert began. The city even temporarily put up “Swiftkirchen” signs and honored the US singer with a stone on the city’s “Walk of Fame”.
