On Wednesday, Rainbow announced a partnership with Cong SA, the company that owns all of Pratt’s intellectual property. In addition to producing the new live-action television series, which is currently in development, Rainbow will manage the licensing rights to “Corto Maltese” worldwide, the companies said in a joint statement.


The history of Corto Maltese
Pratt, whose real name was Ugo Eugenio Pratis a legendary figure in the international comics community, best known for his work on “Corto Maltés,” the long-running historical adventure strip that ran in several European publications between 1967 and 1989. His first graphic novel, and perhaps the most revered, is “Corto Maltese: A Ballad of the Salt Sea”from 1967, which introduced the world to the roguish, chain-smoking sailor.
After Pratt’s death in 1995, the series was resumed in 2015 with five new stories drawn and written by the Spanish duo formed by Juan Diaz Canales and Ruben Pellejero and two drawn and written by the French Bastien Vives and Martin Quenehen. The “Corto Maltese” books have sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and are translated and distributed in 35 countries.
In 2022, it was announced that the American screenwriter, artist and film director Frank Millerthe man behind “The Dark Knight Returns” and “300”would adapt “Corto Maltés” into a live-action miniseries for France’s StudioCanal. But that project did not materialize. Now, Rainbow is going to try.
