Al Pacino: “Real” friendship with “wild” Johnny Depp

On the promotional tour for his new memoir, Al Pacino also talks about his new film with friend Johnny Depp.

Although they haven’t spoken to each other for a few years, Al Pacino (84) shares a deep bond with colleague Johnny Depp (61). The “Godfather” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” stars have teamed up for their new film “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness” (no German release date yet). Pacino has spoken about their friendship.

He calls him the “wild” and “wonderful” Johnny Depp. In the interview on the occasion of his new memoir “Sonny Boy” (on sale since October 15th), Pacino raves about his decades-long bond with Depp and their film together, in which the 84-year-old plays a role and which he co-produced with Depp as director .

“He’s a wild guy and he’s very creative. It was fun to work with him. It really was,” says Pacino about their collaboration on the film about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920).

“We’re like a couple of little kids”

Since the two actors filmed the mafia drama “Donnie Brasco” together in 1997, they have talked about making a film about Modigliani. And they stayed in touch. “He would say: ‘Here we are. A couple of little kids,'” said Pacino, sketching his colleague with the words: “He’s wild. He’s wonderful.”

When asked what Depp’s friendship means to him after all this time, Pacino replied that even though they “rarely see each other” and hadn’t met in person for years before their new film, he considers the bond to be a “real” one falls into a special “category”: “I have a few people like that of whom I can say: They are my friends. And the sad thing about life, about getting older, is losing them one day.”

Pacino about old friends and new joy as a father

It’s not just special film roles like this that he’s happy about. The 84-year-old also experiences his role as a father very differently today. “It’s a lot of fun,” about his relationship with his 16-month-old son Roman (from film producer Noor Alfallah). Since he is not in a relationship with the one-year-old’s mother and therefore does not live with the child, he talks about other ways to communicate with his son. “He writes me a message from time to time,” reports the Oscar winner.
