Former member of the hit band One Direction, Liam Payne, fell from a hotel in Buenos Aires and died on Wednesday at the age of 31, according to police and rescue workers. The British singer “suffered very serious injuries,” the head of the Argentine capital’s emergency services, Alberto Crescenti, told local television. There was “no possibility of revival”. Just minutes after news of Payne’s death became public, distraught fans gathered near the hotel.
Payne died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in the Palermo district, police said. According to Crescenti, rescue workers rushed to the hotel after receiving an emergency call at 5:04 p.m. local time. They arrived there seven minutes after the call and “discovered the death of the man, who we later learned was a singer.”
Payne fell “13 or 14 meters”.
Police said the call reported an “aggressive male” who “may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.” Payne fell “about 13 or 14 meters” and appeared to have suffered a fracture to the base of his skull, Crescenti said.
The news of Payne’s death was “shocking,” wrote reality star and businesswoman Paris Hilton in the online networks. She sends “love and condolences to his family” and those close to him.
The boy band One Direction, whose members also included singer Harry Styles, were cast for a television show and were enormously successful around the world.
