The stadium was left out of the list of protected properties, so the expansion project is not blocked. An increase in capacity is planned to bring it to 84,000 spectators.

After the session in which the new catalog of protected properties was going to be discussed began and La Bombonera was not on the payroll, legislator Edgardo Elifraco of Libertad Avanza reported: “There are four properties that have been removed from the catalog to analyze. They are properties linked to sports institutions, one of them is the Club Atlético Boca Juniors Stadium, La Bombonera”.

This is why, in the midst of the growing expectation for the debut of Fernando Gago as technical director, Boca fans received the encouraging news that will allow Juan Roman Riquelmepresident of the club, carry out the expected remodeling works.
The idea of expanding the stadium, promoted by Riquelme, had faced obstacles due to a plan that sought to declare La Bombonera a historical monument, preventing any structural modification. Faced with this situation, Boca filed a formal claim to prevent its stadium from being classified, which was finally accepted by the Buenos Aires government.
Based on this decision, the club must define the steps to follow within its board of directors. Everything indicates that progress will be made in the project that will significantly increase the capacity of the stadium, which would be a milestone in the club’s history and a response to the demand for tickets from fans.
Boca had already anticipated the situation through a statement addressed to members and fans, in which they expressed their concern about the impact that the definitive classification would have on the future of the club. The management headed by Riquelme and his team remains firm in the idea of expanding La Bombonera to adapt it to the current needs of the institution.
