Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik have spoken out following the death of their One Direction colleague Liam Payne.
Liam Payne (1993-2024) died aged just 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He enjoyed great success with the band One Direction. His colleagues Harry Styles (30), Niall Horan (31), Louis Tomlinson (32) and Zayn Malik (31) have now spoken out. “We are completely devastated by the news of Liam’s death,” it said. “In due course, and when everyone is able, there will be more to say. But first we will take time to grieve and come to terms with the loss of our brother, whom we loved very much.”
The musicians explain that “we will cherish the memories they shared with him forever.” “Our thoughts are now with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him with us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”
Zayn Malik thanks Liam Payne for support
Zayn Malik also published his own farewell words. Alongside a shared throwback photo, he wrote: “Liam, I found myself speaking out loud to you hoping you could hear me. I can’t help but selfishly think there are so many more conversations in our lives for us.” He further wrote: “I could never thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times of my life. When I was missing home as a 17-year-old child, you were always there with a positive attitude and a reassuring smile “Let me know that you are my friend and that I am loved.” Even though Payne was younger than himself, “you were always more sensible than me, you were opinionated and you had no problem telling people when they were wrong. Even though we clashed a few times over this, I secretly liked you always respected for it.”
When it came to music, Liam Payne was the most qualified in every respect. “I knew nothing in comparison, I was a beginner child with no experience and you were already a professional,” Malik looked back. “I was always happy to know that no matter what happened on stage, we could always rely on you knowing which way to steer the ship next,” he continued, concluding: “I have lost a brother when you left us and I can’t explain to you what I would give to hold you in my arms one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved you very much and respected.” He hopes for Payne, “that wherever you are now, you are well and at peace and know how much you are loved. I love you, brother.”
Louis Tomlinson: “Talked about getting back in the studio”
Louis Tomlinson also chimed in in a lengthy post of his own: “I’m devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother. Liam was someone I looked up to every day, such a positive, funny and kind soul.” When he met him at 18, “I was immediately impressed by his voice, but more importantly, over time, I got the chance to see the kind brother I had longed for my whole life.” Payne was an “incredible songwriter with a great sense of melody.” “We often talked about getting back in the studio together and trying to recreate the writing chemistry that we had built up in the band.” In his opinion, his bandmate was “the most important part of One Direction.” “His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his talent for writing. Thank you for shaping us, Liam.”
Addressing Payne, Tomlinson explained: “I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life, but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I’m so grateful that we’ve become even closer since the band . Talking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of great memories we had together is a luxury I thought I would have with you for a lifetime. I would have loved to share the stage with you again. but it wasn’t meant to be.”
He continued: “I want you to know that I will be the uncle Bear needs if he ever needs me and that I will tell him stories about how great his father was. I wish I had the chance had to say goodbye and tell you once again how much I loved you, Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you, my friend.”
