Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (68) awarded US President Joe Biden (81) with the highest German honor. The 81-year-old received the special level of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on October 18th at the start of his visit to Berlin.
A “beacon of democracy”
According to a statement, the Federal President is honoring President Biden’s contributions to German-American friendship and the transatlantic alliance. He has had a significant impact on this in all of his positions over five decades and has strengthened it particularly in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine. According to media reports, Frank-Walter Steinmeier called Joe Biden, among other things, a “beacon of democracy” in his speech.
Joe Biden is only the second US president to receive the highest German honor. In 1993, George HW Bush (1924-2018) was honored with the award for his services to German unity.
According to media reports, among the guests at the reception for Joe Biden in Bellevue Palace was Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer (102), who also exchanged a few words.
