The episode is part of the escalation of criticism and challenges that has been taking place since the author of the Harry Potter saga generated a strong controversy in 2020 after satirizing an article entitled “Creating a more egalitarian post-Covid-19 world for people who menstruate ” when she tweeted: “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”, alluding to the word “woman”, woman in English, ignoring gender identities not binary.
Rowling had contacted Police Scotland in November after the tweet, which showed her home in Edinburgh and revealed the address: She claimed to be a victim of “doxxing”, the act of posting private personal information about an individual or organisation, usually in online format.
The image denounced by the narrator showed activists standing outside the property with banners with slogans such as “trans liberation now”, although those responsible for the intimidation removed the photo the day after it was published.
“I have to assume (they) thought deceiving me would intimidate me from speaking up for women’s rights based on sex,” she tweeted in response to activists at the time. He added: “They should have reflected on the fact that now I have received so many death threats that I could wallpaper the house with them, and I have not stopped talking.”
“Perhaps – and I say this to say the best way to show that your movement is not a threat to women, is to stop stalking, harassing and threatening,” he said at the time.
Clinging to a sexist idiosyncrasy that reacted to the new British gender identity legislation, which allows its citizens to recognize themselves before the law by their self-perceived gender and not by their genitalia, Rowling had said that certain rights of women were threatened by the activism of a part of the trans collective, statements that distanced her from part of her franchise, fans and actors with whom she worked, such as Emma Watson, who openly expresses her support for the trans collective and defends rights with a gender perspective.
The writer assured then that her case is not the only one within the group of women who “refuse to accept that the sociopolitical concept of gender identity must replace that of sex” and that, like her, “they have been the object of intimidation campaigns ranging from harassment on social media, singling out their employers, to cyberattacks and direct threats of violence, including rape.”
