What sounds esoteric has a different meaning for young people. Another term from everyday language is also in the top three.

“Aura” is the “Youth Word of the Year” 2024. In a vote by Langenscheidt-Verlag among the three top terms, “Aura” came in first place. The winning word, which describes a person’s special charisma and charisma, was announced live at the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair.

According to the information, “Aura” landed just ahead of the term “Talahon” – a term for young men in fake luxury clothes. So-called Talahons are causing a stir on social media, and there have been racist discussions about migration and youth culture. The term “scissors” took third place in the vote. In youth language, “scissors” means admitting a mistake or taking blame.

The “Youth Word of the Year” has been around since 2008. Last year, “goofy” won the race. It describes a clumsy, silly person or behavior. Only since 2020 have young people between the ages of 11 and 20 been able to choose the youth word of the year alone. According to the publisher, the number of votes submitted was once again in the high six-figure range.
