October 19, 2024 – 22:00

A date to recognize, as a family, the love and unconditional dedication of our mothers to us.

This year, the October 20 is celebrated as Mother’s Day in Argentina. Although in more than 40 countries this holiday is celebrated in the month of May, ours has a tradition behind it that makes October the month to commemorate mothers. The day serves to recognize a little of the unconditional love, effort and dedication that mothers have for their children.

It does not always fall on the same day, as it is every third Sunday in October, every year it falls on a different day. Although its origins are rooted in religion, today, as in all festivals of this style, faith has taken a back seat and has become a symbol of family unity.

Why Mother’s Day is celebrated on October 20 in Argentina

The election of the third Sunday of the month of October was established after several years. At first the official day was the 11th, to follow a religious tradition, but later the third Sunday of the month was set as a permanent date. The fact that it is located in October gives it a special color because it is in spring, unlike the rest of the world that celebrates it in May.

The tradition of our country goes back to 1931, when Pope Pius XI dedicated the October 11 to the “Divine Motherhood of Mary”, commemorating the Council of Ephesus, an important meeting that took place in the year 431. During the de facto government of José Félix Uriburu, Argentina established Mother’s Day on the Sunday closest to October 11, but over time the third of the month and has remained that way ever since.
