At the Patria Institute Discontent grows with the governor of Buenos Aires. Cristina made it clear last Friday at a meeting at SMATA’s Buenos Aires headquarters. He demanded from Kicillof that his ministers gather endorsements for the “Federalism and Justice” list of Ricardo Quintela and he once again attacked the lack of definition of his former Minister of Economy within the Justicialist Party.
The escalation of the internal conflict between Cristina and Axel also opens a question about eThe end of the cycle of delegated power in Peronism after the presidency of Alberto Fernández that led to the arrival of Javier Milei to power. This new scenario and the eventual fracture of the bond between the governor and the former president, leaves the protagonists even more exposed to a hand-to-hand electoral fight to define the leadership of Peronism.
Tomorrow at the SMATA property in Quilmes, Mayra Mendoza will lead an event in support of Cristina’s candidacy for the PJ. She will be accompanied by Mario “Paco” Manrique, recently resigned from the CGT, whose leadership accompanied Kicillof last October 17 in Berisso.
Axel Kicillof candidate?
If Axel were to stop being “Cristina’s candidate” for 2027, and given the failure of the delegated power model based on Alberto Fernández’s experience, the clamor for Cristina to be a candidate could also have continuity beyond the internal of the PJ. The same dilemma is presented to Kicillof, whom some leaders of his cabinet already imagine as the possible head of the candidate list for national deputy if the internal dispute with Kirchnerism escalates.
The Next year’s legislative elections are scheduled for Sunday, October 26 but the campaign will start 60 days before. But in June the lists for the primaries should be presented. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner as political head of Peronism will have a fundamental role in the preparation of the ballot. Whoever heads the list of candidates for national deputies in 2024 will be positioned as Kicillof’s eventual successor at the head of the Buenos Aires governorate.
Máximo Kirchner’s group dominates 12 municipalities in the province of Buenos Aires and is going for more. There are also several communal leaders who do not rule out fighting for the governorship. From Leonardo Nardini (Malvinas Argentinas), passing through Gustavo Menéndez (Merlo) and also Federico Achaval (Pilar). These are mayors who preserve the unity of Peronism with oiled bridges with both La Cámpora and Kicillof and Sergio Massa.
Kicillof I would already have in pectore a favorite for his succession. It is about Carlos Bianco, his chief of staff, friend and most trusted official. Bianco had been demoted to the position of advisor when Martín Insaurralde landed as head of the Buenos Aires cabinet at the hands of Máximo Kirchner after the electoral defeat of Peronism in the 2021 legislative elections. In his second term as governor, Kicillof once again enthroned Bianco as head cabinet and eventual candidate for governor of Buenos Aires in 2025.
The last experiment of Peronism to divide the PASO was in 2015 with the internal contest between Aníbal Fernández and Julián Domínguez for the candidacy for governor of Buenos Aires. Peronism not only lost in the province of Buenos Aires where María Eugenia Vidal became the successor of Daniel Scioli, but also at the national level against Mauricio Macri.
The intern in the Justicialist Party
This Saturday, Kicillof tried to de-escalate the internal situation with a message titled “Build a shield and an alternative: for that, unity”, where he expressed that “Quintela is not my candidate, he is a governor and a leader who has been confronting, with a courage that “Milei’s policies from a province far from the Buenos Aires media and networks are not abundant.”
Beyond this positionthe president supported the governor of La Rioja: “It is a mistake to think that this is a leader whom I ‘raise or lower’, but above all it is a big mistake to attack him. The logic of the subjugated or traitor is a logic that has entered into a crisis and is causing bad results. It seems that what is happening in the country and in our political force is not fully recorded: there is anger, differences and disagreements. “These claims, those angers must be heard with humility and in no way can they be disqualified as signs of betrayal.”
He then remarked that “Cristina is in the heart of the people, also in mine, and I don’t have to test that feeling.. With the leaders who oppose it, with the CGT and the two CTA, with the social movements, with all the groups, with all the governors and mayors, with all the militancy; “With our differences but above all with our shared love for the country, I hope that the Justicialista Party dedicates all its energy to strengthening the shield and the alternative that our people so need.”
