Government vs AFA: they move forward with the reduction of tax benefits for clubs

After the setback that the reelection of Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia in the Argentine Football Association (AFA), the government of Javier Milei decided to move forward and focus on the balance sheets of the sports entity for alleged irregularities. In addition to this, they are finalizing the legal details to take away tax benefits to the clubs that make it up.

Through the Decree 939/2024it was established that the tax benefits for Argentine soccer clubs will end within six months, taking as a starting point this Tuesday, when the measure was published.

At the same time, this decision create a committee to fix “a efficient, sufficient and sustainable system for its replacement”, during this period, according to the document.

The decree states: “The regime established by the Decree No. 510 of October 10 of 2023 will end six months after the entry into force of this one.”

Thus, the tension between the government and the AFA intensifies, given that the measure was taken a few days after the football body ignored the ruling of the General Inspection of Justice (IGJ) and also held the Assembly in which Tapia was re-elected as president.
