Britney Spears marries herself: What’s behind sologamy

Britney Spears tied the knot herself – just like stars like Selena Gomez and Adriana Lima before her. What’s behind the sologamy trend?

Wedding bells are ringing for Britney Spears! The 42-year-old singer tells her fans about her third marriage. It’s likely to be a forever connection: Spears married herself. the singer poses in a white satin wedding dress. Britney Spears has prominent role models

She is not the first star to go this route: in 2003, Sarah Jessica Parker tied the knot in front of an audience of millions – albeit in her role as Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City”. 14 years later, top model Adriana Lima followed suit in real life. She announced her wedding to herself on Instagram: “The ring is symbolic, I promise myself and my happiness with it.” Recently, Selena Gomez also made her self-wedding public on her 30th birthday. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the actress said: “I always thought I would be married by my 30th birthday. So I just threw myself a wedding.” More self-love for yourself through marriage – this calculation seems to be working out for some celebrities. What is behind the phenomenon?

Compared to monogamy, the exclusive partnership between two people, and polygamy, the romantic relationship with multiple people, relationships according to the concept of sologamy involve only one person: oneself. Marriage is most often associated with a solemn ceremony and is considered an act of marriage Understanding self-love. In front of the altar, people swear eternal love and honor to each other in good times and bad. Accusations of narcissism are quickly raised among critics.

However, self-marriage does have an important message in many countries. After the concept was originally invented in the USA, it has been gaining momentum in recent years, especially in Asia. In conservative Japan, more and more women are rejecting traditional weddings and family life and opting for an independent and successful work-life balance. Travel agencies and photo studios sell individual weddings as an experience package: wedding dress, bouquet of flowers, hairstyle and a final shoot with photo album are available from 2000 euros.

Sologamy not possible in Germany

There are also numerous agencies in the United States that specialize in sologamy. However, you cannot have an official marriage. The individual weddings are purely symbolic. After the wedding, you are still counted as single in the eyes of the law. This means you don’t have any tax advantages.

The same applies in Germany: Nobody can legally marry themselves. According to Section 1353 of the German Civil Code (BGB), a marriage is “concluded by two people of different or same sex for life.” Symbolic sologamy events, such as Selena Gomez’s pompous wedding, are of course also possible in this country.
