In an interview, singer Nicole reveals how she is celebrating her 60th birthday, what the number means to her and what is on her bucket list.
Singer Nicole turns 60 on October 25th. She’s not only celebrating her big birthday with the release of her new album “Carpe Diem”, which will be released on November 15th. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, the 1982 ESC winner tells us how she will celebrate the day and how she thinks about the number 60. She also reveals how recovering from breast cancer has changed the way she looks at her life and what plans she is making for the coming year.
Your new album is called “Carpe Diem”. How do you try to incorporate the motto into your life?
Nicole: Very consciously. Life is finite and you don’t know what fate has in store for you. So enjoy the day as if it were your last and to the fullest. Treat yourself and do something good for yourself. People often ask themselves: “Can I do that? What will they think if I do that now?” No, I don’t want to ask: “Can I? May I?” I want to do it. Surprisingly, this works quite well.
The new album will be closely linked to your 60th birthday. How are you going to celebrate?
Nicole: I’m going away with my family for a week. We’ll have a good time and soak up a few more rays of sunshine. I’ll be surprised by what’s waiting for me there. I do think that my two daughters have cooked something up, but I don’t ask. When it comes to birthdays, I’m the laid back type and don’t plan anything big. If anyone would like to congratulate, feel free to do so. And then you toast, but I won’t celebrate big this time either.
Do you think about the number 60 differently today than you did before?
Nicole: Yes, when I was a child, you were old at 60. Nowadays it’s no longer an age at all when you see how women are in their lives at 60. For me, the six in front of it is just a number. Yesterday there was a five, tomorrow it will be a six – luckily. I still have a lot to do and plans. For example, on my bucket list is a trip to Australia and New Zealand, I’ve never been there. I’ve heard so much about the beautiful landscape there, I want to see it with my own eyes. It is very important that you stay agile in life and set goals.
How has your cancer changed the way you look at your birthday or life in general?
Nicole: Luckily I’m feeling great again today. It shows you how precious life is and that you should use the time for yourself. You wouldn’t want anyone to realize this until after you’ve been diagnosed and overcome an illness. That’s why the song “Carpe Diem” is very important, so that it makes people aware that everything can be different tomorrow. Your time on earth is just borrowed and you are the master of your own happiness. Plus, with an illness like this, time is your worst enemy. Therefore: Everyone go for a check-up, early detection is very important. This can save lives and is not something to joke about.
What are you most looking forward to in the coming year?
Nicole: I’m looking forward to the tour and the audience’s reaction to what we’ve been dreaming up for months. It’s fulfilling when you get the reward for your work. Otherwise, I’m looking forward to my annual trip to Cape Town in January. I love South Africa and have to go there once a year. It’s like a compulsion (laughs). I always go up Table Mountain first and take a photo at the same spot. And let’s see, maybe I can make it to Australia next year too.
